Context
Use a Human-Centered Design approach to test feasible, effective approaches to workers’ Sexual, Reproductive, and maternal Health (SRMHR), nutrition, and hygiene.
The health and productivity of Cambodian garment workers have declined due to malnutrition. 43.2 % of garment workers suffer from anemia, and 15.7% are underweight. Today, CARE focuses on empowering vulnerable women in Cambodia, reaching over 175,000 people each year, particularly women who have migrated to urban areas, women and girls from ethnic minorities, and rural women who are denied multiple rights.
To better understand the context, we conducted some field research to identify barriers and opportunities to create innovative solutions to promote learning and potential behaviour change in the areas of sexual, reproductive and maternal health (SRMH), nutrition and hygiene.
“I didn’t have any information when I had my first baby. Now, with the second one, I am getting a lot of useful information from the nurse”. _Maly
Maly is learning at her factory not only how to be a better worker and leader, but she is also learning important lessons through CARE’s training about nutrition, sexual education, and maternity health.
01
Immersion & Research
Field immersion to understand practices and behaviors of workers regarding HEALTH, nutrition, and hygiene
Identify gaps and barriers faced by garment factory workers through field and desk research. Understand the nutritional needs and practices and other health-related issues of garment factory workers.
02
Co-creation
Co-creation with stakeholders to identify opportunities for interventions among the target group
Involving all stakeholders to bring collective intelligence around the topic and from a variety of perspectives. The workshop was a space of iteration and exchange to conceptualise innovative and disruptive scenarios that could respond to the current barriers and concerns of the target audience.
03
Design Interventions & Test
Prototyping and testing of a digital service to build the capacity of frontline health workers and provide better counseling to garment workers
After several rounds of iteration, we focused on a key intervention that is currently under-resourced and affects a large number of workers: in-depth pregnancy monitoring and counselling throughout the journey.
The concept and key features of the app and its content were validated and refined through field testing.
03
Development & Implementation
Implementation of an app designed to facilitate health checks and monitoring during pregnancy
To support nurses in counseling, we developed an app as a guide and decision support tool for infirmary staff to use with pregnant and postpartum women inside factories. We worked on User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design and developed a user-friendly interface design easy to understand for the patients and nurses.
